Skin Fade vs. Taper: What's the Difference? A San Antonio Barber's Guide

October 29, 2026•2 min read

If you've ever sat down in the chair and said "just fade it up a little," you're not alone. Skin fades and tapers look similar from across the room, but they're different cuts. Here's how to tell them apart.

The skin fade. The hair blends down to the skin, usually around the sides and back of the head. It's a bold, sharp look with a lot of contrast. Because it goes all the way down to bare skin, it's also the cut that shows growth the fastest.

The taper. The hair gets gradually shorter toward the neckline and around the ears, but it doesn't go down to the skin. It's cleaner and more conservative, and it works well for the office, the job site or anywhere in between. It's a classic that never goes out of style.

Which one is right for you? If you like a crisp, high-contrast look and don't mind regular upkeep, go with a skin fade. If you want a tidy, natural look that grows out gracefully, a taper is hard to beat. Not sure? Tell your barber how you wear your hair day to day, and they'll point you in the right direction.

How often to get it cut.

Skin fade: every 1 to 2 weeks. The contrast starts to soften quickly once the skin shows fuzz.

Taper: every 3 to 4 weeks. It keeps its shape longer as it grows out.

Want a longer-term plan? Most of our regulars book their next cut before they leave the chair. Ask your barber to set you up on a schedule, and your spot is always waiting.
